Eugenio and Chieko Campaiola celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip through Portsmouth, N.H. and southern Maine with their daughter, Jean and son-in-law, Roger Harris.
Gene was born on Chestnut Street in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School. After the war, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where he met his future bride.
Chieko Iizuka graduated from Teacher's college and was working in Tokyo at the time. After Gene was transferred to the U.S., they corresponded for three years until he flew back to Japan to marry her at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo on Oct. 31, 1961.
They were stationed at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, then at Tyndall AFB in Florida. After 25 years in the service, they moved to Lawrence where Gene worked for the Post Office. Chieko worked as a seamstress at Formal Fashions and then the Abbey Bridal Shop.
They have traveled to Europe and to Japan many times, and each fall visit Jean and Roger in the Carolinas. At home they enjoy a large and loving family in Methuen. Each winter, they take a Carribbean Cruise and warm up with the Red Sox in Ft. Myers, Fla.
