Nikki Surette, left, and Semi Weldeamlak, both of Lowell, took over the former Java Joe's in downtown Methuen last summer and refashioned the coffee shop into a cafe called Gemma's, featuring sandwiches, soups, salads and pastries. They are hosting a grand opening Dec. 29 with a raffle, door prizes and free samples.
