A look back at the highlights that made 2012 special

January Highlights

Jan. 7: Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, a native of Andover, was named as the successor to legendary football coach Joe Paterno at scandal-rocked Penn State.

Jan. 7: Salem’s Jerickson Fedrick won the 55 meters at the Dartmouth Relays in 6.39, which is believed to be the top early-season time in the country.

Jan. 13: Phillips senior Tom Palleschi of Haverhill pulled down 16 rebounds to surpass 1,000 for his career.

Jan. 18: Isaiah Nelsen scored 16 points and Zach Karalis dominated late as North Andover stunned East Boston, the fourth-ranked team in EMass., 52-43.

Jan. 18: Bill James won his 300th career wrestling match (183rd at Methuen) as the Rangers whipped Billerica.

Jan. 20: Haverhill’s Carlos Pena signed a 1-year, $7.25 million to return to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jan. 20: Georges Niang of Methuen, a fifth-year senior at prep powerhouse Tilton, scored his 2,000th career point.

Jan. 21: John Heffernan, who hadn’t been able to crack the lineup since Dec. 2, got a chance and made the most of it. His OT goal gave Merrimack a 3-2 win over UNH.

Jan. 21: Lawrence’s Roberto Garcia, Brian Montero Ford, Ruben Munoz and Kelvin Severino won the State Division 1 relays 4x50 yard dash in 21.82, smashing the 6-year-old All-State record by 0.30 seconds.

Jan. 21: With his team trailing 28-6, Marionel Garcia posted an upset win at 182, starting a stretch of six straight wins for defending Division 1 state dual meet champion Lawrence, which beat Division 2 champ North Andover, 30-28.

Jan. 23: Northern Essex basketball star Kyle Davis began serving a six-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to distributing marijuana.

Jan. 25: Brendan Varney led a sweep of the 600 to lift North Andover past Newburyport, 45-41, and snap the Clippers’ 26-meet win streak. The win also clinched a share of the CAL title which the Knights later won outright.

Jan. 28: Julia Mehlman won the dash and high jump as North Andover shaded Masconomet, 45-41, to finish 10-0.
