Dinner with a View (click on story to view video) New owners of popular Kingston, N.H. restaurant stay true to its decades-old roots

KINGSTON, N.H. — Don't worry, The Pond View is still the Pond View.

It's just that these days, it's Rick's Pond View.

The Rick in question is Rick Korn. The Kingston native and owner of Rick's Cafe and Grille on Main Street bought the town landmark last year, when it went into foreclosure.

"When my wife and I were sitting around taking about it, we were thinking of all the new avenues," said Korn, who has worked at Scandia and Joseph's Winter Street Cafe, both in Newburyport.

"With this place, the possibilities are astronomical," he said.

The Johnson and Wales graduate will officially reopen the restaurant this Saturday with a grand opening starting at 6 p.m., featuring free music and champagne.

Though the restaurant has been open since it was purchased, the staff wanted some time to get accustomed to the location before officially welcoming regulars.

"We have gotten to the point that we are ready to let people know we are here," said manager Greg Rodgers. "We wanted to make sure that when (regulars) came here, we were up to par."

Growing up in Kingston, Korn always appreciated the Pond View. The restaurant opened more than 30 years ago on the side of 125. It was popularly known for its eclectic decor of mismatched plates, glasses and tablecloths, as well as its classic fare — especially prime rib, and its collection of animals that call the grounds home, from goats to a peacock.

When he took it over, he didn't want to change much. He even kept the multicolored tablecloths and antique glasses and plates in use.

"That is what it was known for," Korn said. "The Pond View was around for 35 years and it was very successful."

He has made a few structural changes over the last few months — like upgrading the septic system and adding a lounge. And a few more changes are in the works, like setting up more outdoor dining on the pond. But Korn won't mess around much with the structure or ambiance.

"There is no reason to reinvent the wheel," Korn said.

He and staff even kept on the Pond View's menagerie of animals — goats, ducks, doves and a peacock. Families often feed them in the summer.

"We're on the side of 125, that makes us accessible," Rodgers said. "But we want people to realize we are still in the country, and the animals help with that. It's more natural."

The menu at Rick's Pond View mixes classic dishes and some new favorites. Filet mignon stuffed mushrooms and seared foie gras mingle with scallops wrapped in bacon and shrimp cocktail as appetizers.

For entrees, prime rib and baked stuffed haddock are served alongside beef Wellington and lobster Thermidor.

"The Pond View has always been known for its great prime rib and locally caught seafood," said Korn. "As our menu grows we'll have different, funkier food from different areas of the world."
