WEEK 17: The finale

Burt correctly picked 10 winners of the 16 games. It proved to be a difficult week with many teams, particularly favorites, resting their players. Of the 309 entries, 44 picked more than Burt.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. This week we will be giving away shirts to 12 winners, all of whom were within one point of the Patriots point total (27) in their finale against the Houston Texans.

The Week 17 winners were:

  • Louie Framarini, Litchfield, N.H.
  • Ray Metthe, Haverhill
  • Bill Letourneau, Lawrence
  • Kenneth Perron, Derry, N.H.
  • William Scism, Andover
  • Carole Gilardi, Gloucester

  • Bill Collins, Lawrence
  • Jim Ellington, Derry, N.H.

WEEK 16: No one beats Burt

In Week 16, nobody beat Burt. That's not a misprint. Burt correctly had 13 of the 15 winners. Of the 312 entries, there were four that tied Burt.

It marked the second week of the season that nobody beat Burt. It happened on Week 1 as well.

WEEK 15: 5-year-old beats Burt

North Andover resident Drew Connolly made "I Beat Burt" history this week. The 5-year-old became youngest entry to win an "I Beat Burt" T-shirt, picking nine winners out of the 15 NFL games this weekend. Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt only got eight right.

The irony is that Connolly's 8-year-old brother, Justin, was a winner last month.

This week there were 310 entries, with 53 picking more winners than Burt did.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded to those that pick more winners than Burt. The first tiebreaker is the amount of points the Patriots scored (17).

This week, all of the winners were within four points of the Patriots point total.

Here are the Week 15 winners:

  • George Leondires, Salisbury;
  • Pat carroll, Topsfield
  • Drew Connolly, North Andover
  • Peter Ambrosio, Londonderry, N.H.
  • Steve Carroll, Topsfield
  • Joe Lister, Salem, N.H.
  • Arthur King, Haverhill
  • Lundy Carre, Tewksbury

  • Tony Vallante, Lawrence

WEEK 14: Winners announced

Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt picked against the highly-favored New England Patriots last week. It meant instead of 48 entries beating him, 88 did.

Burt finished 9-6 in the Week 14 of the "I Beat Burt" contest, sponsored by Commonwealth Motors in Lawrence.

Burt was among only 12 entries that picked against the Patriots.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded for those that pick more winners than Burt. The first tiebreaker, when there are more than 10 entries that pick more winners tha Burt, is the amount of points the Patriots scored (20).

This week, all of the winners were within three points of the Patriots total.

Here are the Week 14 winners:

  • Dave Heidler, East Hampstead, N.H.
  • Paul Lever, Bradford

WEEK 13: Winners announced

It was another solid week for Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt. After consecutive weeks of 11 wins, Burt had 10 wins in Week 13.

In all there were 292 entries with 38 picking more winners than Burt did.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. This week, coincidentally, five entered on-line and five entered through the entry blank in the newspaper.

The first tiebreaker is amount of points the Patriots scored, which was 21 this week.

Nine of the winners were within five points. The final winner, which had the Patriots at 27 points, was decided by the second tiebreaker and had 13 correct selections.

Here are the Week 13 winners:

  • Francis McCarty, North Andover
  • Kevin McElhinney, Methuen
  • Bill Foley, North Andover
  • Carl Clarke, Salem, N.H.
  • Michael Machera, Methuen
  • Julie Waters, Salem, N.H.
  • Tom Mackie, Amesbury
  • Dianne Perlino, Haverhill
  • Mary Paquette, Salem
  • Donald Aimaro, Bradford

WEEK 12: Only 8 win T-shirts

Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt is officially out of his slump. He picked 11 of 13 winners in Week 12 of the "I Beat Burt" contest, including the New Orleans Saints win over the Patriots.

Only eight of the 325 entries were able to pick more winners than Burt did. Six of the eight entries that picked 12 winners, picked the Patriots to beat the Saints, thus missing out on a perfect week.

Included among this week's winners was 8-year-old Justin Connolly, of North Andover, whose dad was a winner a few weeks ago and the Dan and Jim Morrissey of Shelburne, Vt.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded for those that pick more winners than Burt. The first tiebreaker is amount of points the Patriots score. The second tiebreaker is correct selections. The final tiebreaker is random draw.

Here are the Week 12 winners:

  • Donald Saab, of Salem, N.H.
  • Michael Machera, of Methuen
  • Justin Connolly, of North Andover
  • Marilyn Mulchahey, of Salem, N.H.
  • Brenda McKenney, of Salem, N.H.
  • Charles Mack, Hampstead, N.H.
  • Dan Morrissey, Shelburne, Vt.
  • Jim Morrissey, Shelburne, Vt.

WEEK 11: Burt makes a comeback

After a three-week struggle, Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt had his "A" game back for Week 11.

Burt had 12 winners in 15 pro football games this weekend. Of the 301 entries last week, only 15 picked more winners than Burt did. And if Tennessee had not upset Houston on Monday night, there would have been only four winners.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. The first tiebreaker is the Patriots point total (31). The second tiebreaker is amount of correct selections.

All of this week's winners were within three points of the Patriots total.

The Week 11 winners were:

  • Joe McManus, North Andover
  • Steve Lemerisae, Haverhill
  • R.J. Fuller, Haverhill
  • Don Lefebvre, Methuen
  • Harry Ball, Methuen
  • Sal Gilardi, Gloucester
  • Robert Lebrun, Newburyport
  • Ginger Framarini, Litchfield, N.H.
  • A.J. Fossiano, Salem, N.H.
  • Allan Bistany, Methuen.

WEEK 10: Burt goes 7-7

For the third consecutive week, Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt couldn't pick more winners than losers. Burt finished with a 7-7 record for Week 10.

Like a lot of entries, Burt had the Patriots beating the Colts.

There were 314 entries in all, including 165 online.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. The first tiebreaker is the Patriots point total. The second tiebreaker is amount of correct selections. This week, all of the winners were within one point point of the Patriots total (34).

WEEK 9: Burt gets pummeled

The "I Beat Burt" contest rules state each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. But there is one addendum to that rule that states if you pick more winners than Burt and pick the Patriots point total (the first tiebreaker) exactly you will win.

Last week, there were 32 entries that did exactly that and they all will be getting T-shirts.

Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt made only six correct selections out of the 13 games. It marked the second straight week that Burt got only six games right.

"My slump will end this weekend, guaranteed," said Burt, who started the year off hot when nobody beat him in the opening week.

In all there were 329 entries, including a record 161 entries online.

Below are the Week 9 winners:

  • Joey Lister, Salem, NH
  • Milt Taylor, Haverhill
  • Theresa Uzdasvinis, Salem, NH

WEEK 8: Burt goes 6-7

Eagle-Tribune sports columnist Bill Burt had a bad week, a really bad week. He correctly picked only six of the 13 games, so we will be giving out 10 extra T-shirts for his malaise.

We will be giving out 10 T-shirts for those that filed entries on-line and 10 more for those that sent them in via mail. In all there were 305 entries.

The online entry blank included a tiebreaker for points scored by the Indianapolis Colts, which was 18. All of the winners were within six points of the Colts total.

The entry blank in The Eagle-Tribune did not include a tiebreaker so the winners were based on correct selections. All of the winners had 10 or more wins.

This week's winners were:

  • Harry Fleischer, East Hampstead, N.H.
  • Jackie Cottier, Derry, N.H.

WEEK 7: Burt goes 9-4

It was North Andover week for the Week 7 of the "I Beat Burt" contest.

Five of the 10 winners this week, all hailed from North Andover, including 13-year-old eighth grade middle school student Jeff Warden.

This week Burt correctly picked nine winners out of the 13 games.

In all, there were 298 entries, including 155 on-line.

All of this week's winners were within one point of the Patriots point total (35). In fact, four entries had the exact total while the other six had the Patriots scoring 34 points.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. The first tiebreaker is Patriots point total. The second tiebreaker is amount of correct selections, which was needed, with all winners having 11 or more wins.

This week's winners were:

  • Thomas Perlino, Haverhill
  • Jeff Warden, North Andover
  • Ron Mertens, Groveland
  • George Nussbaum, Danville, N.H.
  • Gloria Foley, North Andover
  • Kathy McGurren, North Andover
  • John Gagnon, Salisbury
  • Al Ferruolo, North Andover
  • Bob Winne, North Andover
  • Nick Ciolino, Gloucester

WEEK 6: Burt goes 6-8

In all there were 294 entries.

  • David Muldowney, Haverhill
  • Joseph Aiello, Manchester, Ma.
  • Bob Brolin, Haverhill

WEEK 5: Burt goes 9-5

It was a crazy week in the NFL with seven road teams and five underdogs winning in Week 5.

The Eagle-Tribune's Bill Burt fell prey to the strange happenings, finishing 9-5. One of his misses was the Patriots. Nine of the 10 winners this week went the other way and had Denver pulling off the mini-upset over the Patriots.

In all there were 315 entries, with 49 people picking 10 winners or more.

Each week a maximum of 10 winners with the first tiebreaker being the Patriots point total (17). This week five winners correctly had the exact Patriots point total. The other five winners were within five points.

Here are the Week 5 winners:

  • Frank McKinney, Methuen
  • David Sharkey, Merrimac
  • Jim Rubera, Haverhill
  • Jack Gilhooly, Methuen
  • Anthony Daloia, Lawrence
  • Brian Privitera, Hampstead, N.H.
  • Richard Lane, Andover
  • Jose Cuevas, Lawrence
  • Donald Boyer, Georgetown
  • J.G. Menowske, Winchester.

Overall, there were 292 entries.

All of this week's winners were within one point of the Patriots point total (27), which is the first tiebreaker.

Eagle-Tribune sports editor Bill Burt talks about this week's
results from the I Beat Burt contest.

A season-high 325 entries were recorded in Week 3 of the "I Beat Burt" contest.

Eagle-Tribune executive sports editor Bill Burt correctly picked 11 winners in the 16 games.

The first tiebreaker — the amount of points the Patriots scored (26) — was used and all entries that had the Patriots at 27 were winners. One entry, Lefty Cote of East Kingston, N.H., not only picked 13 winners but he also had the exact Patriots point total of 26.

We also had our first multiple winner of 2009, with 13-year-old North Andover student, Sean Reardon, picking 13 winners this past weekend.

All of the other winners had the Patriots scoring 27 points.

Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded. Due to the fact there were no winners on Week 1, two extra shirts will be delivered to this week's winners.

Here are the Week 3 T-shirt winners:

  • Lefty Cote, East Kingston, N.H.
  • James Capodilupo, Lawrence
  • Bob Parker, North Andover
  • Gordon Sykes, Plaistow, N.H.
  • Sean Reardon, North Andover
  • Anthony Perry, North Andover
  • John Nigrelli, Methuen
  • John Mulcahey, Salem, N.H.
  • William Kenny, Methuen
  • Dan Morrissey, Shelburne, Vt.
  • Tom Mackie, Amesbury
  • Ryan Beal, Andover

WEEK 2: Burt goes 8-8

Eagle-Tribune sports columnist Bill Burt knows what it is like to be the New England Patriots after Week 2 of the NFL season. He was roughed up.

After a week in which nobody "Beat Burt" in the weekly contest in The Eagle-Tribune, he had no such luck in the second week.

Burt finished 8-8 after going 14-1 in Week 1.

In all, there 252 entries, with 51 picking more winners than Burt's eight. Each week a maximum of 10 T-shirts are awarded with the Patriots point total as the first tiebreaker and the amount of correct selections the second tiebreaker. This week, because nobody won last week, we will be awarding 13 T-shirts. All of the winners chose a Patriots score of 23 points or less. The Patriots scored only nine points.

The Week 2 T-shirt winners are:

  • Kevy McElhinney, Methuen
  • Camerson Kenny, Andover
  • Robin Waters, Salem, N.H.
  • George Ouellette, Plaistow, N.H.
  • Tom Mackie, Amesbury
  • John Curley, Gloucester
  • George Gickas, Haverhill
  • Dick Derby, Pelham, N.H.
  • Lucy Frazier, Lawrence
  • Tony Vallante, Lawrence
  • Kathy McGuinness, Atkinson, N.H.
  • Conrad Karcz, Dracut
  • Sean Reardon, North Andover

WEEK 1: Nobody beats Burt in football picks contest

Bill Burt talks about the return of the "I Beat Burt" contest.

There was only one winner in Week 1 of the "I Beat Burt" Contest. Bill Burt.

The Eagle-Tribune sports columnist took on all comers and nobody was able to beat him in the contest, which returned after a one-year hiatus.

Burt opened the season sizzling, correctly picking 13 of the 14 winners listed in the weekly pool, losing only the N.Y. Jets-Houston Texans game (Burt chose the Texans). Among his upset picks was the San Francisco 49ers over the Arizona Cardinals, the defending NFC champs.

In all there were 236 "losing" entries, although there were four entries that tied Burt.
