---- — BOSTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has nominated Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Leo Sorokin to the federal bench in Massachusetts.

The White House announced Thursday that Sorokin is Obama’s nominee for the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts.

Sorokin began serving as the chief federal magistrate judge last year, after working for seven years as a magistrate judge in the same court.

He worked as an assistant federal public defender in Boston from 1997 until he was appointed a magistrate judge in 2005. He previously worked as an assistant state attorney general and as a private attorney.

Sorokin received his law degree from Columbia Law School and an undergraduate degree from Yale College.

In January, the judge of the federal court in Massachusetts reappointed him to a second eight-year term as a magistrate judge.
