SALEM, Mass. — A young man was struck by a commuter rail train shortly after 10 last night.
The unidentified pedestrian, believed to be 18 to 20 years of age, suffered serious head injuries and was transported to Salem Hospital, according to police Sgt. Andrew Dacy.
The accident happened off Broadway behind the McDonald’s restaurant on Canal Street, police said. The train was headed to Boston.
Police said they received a call about the incident at 10:08 p.m. and also were contacted by MBTA police.
Following the accident, the MBTA ceased train service and transported more than 100 passengers by bus from the accident scene. The Fire Department also responded to the accident.
The victim appeared to be a teenager, according to Deputy fire Chief James Lynch. He said there were two youths with the victim at the time of the accident.
Dacy had no further information at press time last night.
According to the MBTA Transit Police, the victim was transported to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Transit Police detectives are currently investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
