Republican Tarr opts out of Mass. Senate race

BOSTON (AP) — The Republican leader of the Massachusetts Senate is taking himself out of consideration for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by John Kerry.

Sen. Bruce Tarr, of Gloucester, released a statement late Thursday saying that after "extensive and intense consideration," he has decided not to be a candidate in the upcoming special election.

Tarr said he would remain on Beacon Hill and continue working to reform state government. He is one of four Republicans in the 40-member state Senate.

State Rep. Daniel Winslow and Cohasset businessman and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez are seeking the Republican nomination to run in the June 25 special election for the U.S. Senate. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and Sean Bielat, a two-time congressional candidate, are considering entering the GOP primary race.
