Mass. Gov. Patrick not taking lead on rock-song debate

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick isn’t choosing sides in the raging debate over which song should be named Massachusetts’ official rock song.

Asked Monday if he’s considered which song should win the honorary title — The Modern Lovers’ “Roadrunner” or Aerosmith’s “Dream On” — Patrick at first responded by saying: “No.”

When pressed and asked if he knows the songs, Patrick again said “No,” adding “I’m not even sure what you’re talking about.”

Patrick quickly recovered however, acknowledging he was aware of the debate, but said that he hasn’t considered which song should get the “official rock song” honor.

The battle began after fans of “Roadrunner,” a 1970s ode to the joys of driving along Route 128 late at night, launched a social media campaign.

That prompted a backlash from Aerosmith fans.
