Boston cardinal reaches out to Mass. lawmakers

---- — BOSTON (AP) — Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley has met with rank-and-file lawmakers behind closed doors in an effort to build stronger ties to Beacon Hill.

The archdiocese’s spokesman, Terry Donilon, said the meeting Thursday at the Union Club, a private social club, lasted about an hour. He said 130 lawmakers were invited and about 60 came, while others sent staff members.

Donilon said O’Malley didn’t talk about any legislation, but was instead simply trying to get to know lawmakers.

In a statement, O’Malley said he discussed with lawmakers how the church’s various social and educational programs can help their constituents.

Outside the meeting, sex abuse victims called on the church to support legislation extending the statute of limitations on civil sex abuse cases. That would give victims more time to sue alleged attackers.
