Authorities: Bus driver had phone in hand in crash

BOSTON (AP) — Investigators say the veteran driver whose bus crashed through a guardrail, leaving the front end hanging over the Massachusetts Turnpike, appeared to have a cellphone in her hand at the time.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police report says 42-year-old Shanna Shaw told them after Sunday’s crash in Newton that a sneezing fit caused her to lose control.

But investigators who reviewed video surveillance from the bus say Shaw “had an item in her left hand, consistent in size and shape, with a cellular telephone.”

MBTA operators are barred from carrying cellphones on the job.

Shaw is charged with obstruction of justice, operating to endanger, speeding and impeded operation. She has been removed from service.

Seven passengers were taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
