Young reindeer resting in Mass. after knee surgery

GRAFTON, Mass. (AP) — A young female reindeer is back home in Boston for the holidays and resting comfortably after undergoing knee surgery at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

Willow, a 1½-year-old reindeer, is in stable condition after clinicians performed the procedure to treat a condition caused when a kneecap dislocates or moves out of its normal location.

Willow lives with two other reindeer at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham. She was taken to the Cummings School after suffering from a condition known as luxating patella.

Prof. Robert McCarthy, a veterinary surgeon who performed the procedure , expects a full recovery with no limp on the affected leg.

Willow is resting in the zoo hospital at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, which is managed by a group that also runs Stone Zoo.

Manchester, NH, seeks to make schools health hubs

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — The public health department in Manchester, N.H., has won a grant to transform three of the city’s public schools into destinations where residents can access a range of services aimed at improving community health.

More than 400 agencies applied for the funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Manchester was one of 18 selected. The grant is being matched by several local funding sources, bringing the total to $332,000.

The project is based on the idea that when neighbors feel connected, the stressors of crime and poverty diminish and people are able to improve their health. It will involve revamping schools so they become the hub for neighborhood events and places where residents of all ages can attend educational programs and get connected to health and social services.
