Mass. state trooper hurt when cruiser struck

NORWOOD, Mass. (AP) — A state trooper working a detail in Interstate 95 in Norwood has been hospitalized after his parked cruiser was struck from behind by another vehicle.

A state police spokesman says the trooper was in his vehicle at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday protecting a road paving crew when he was struck by a pickup truck with three occupants.

The crash caused extensive damage to the cruiser, and the trooper had to be extricated by firefighters. He was conscious but in pain and was transported to a Boston hospital.

A male occupant of the pickup suffered an arm injury and was also hospitalized.

The pickup driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He is expected to be cited for operating to endanger and marked lanes violation.

No names were immediately released.
