Man skips on Maine-to-NH cab fare
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A taxi driver who drove a man from Portland, Maine, to Manchester, N.H., says he skipped out on the $150 fare after pulling a gun on her.
Tina Shaw tells WMUR-TV she was driving her cab for ABC Taxi of Portland when she picked up a fare at the Greyhound Bus Terminal in Portland on Friday afternoon. She says the man asked for a ride to Manchester and she told him it would cost $150.
Shaw says that when she arrived in Manchester, her passenger pulled out a handgun and demanded money. Shaw jumped out of the taxi and ran off. She told police she looked back and saw the passenger running away from the vehicle.
The suspect didn’t get any cash — but he didn’t pay the fare.
Boston worker arrested on child porn charges
BOSTON — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino placed a city worker on unpaid administrative leave effective immediately after police arrested the 47-year-old man on child porn charges.
James Mansfield is an executive assistant in the Boston Transportation Department. He is charged with possession of child pornography. He was arrested Friday after an internet investigation revealed he was engaging in graphically sexual chat. Police also say Mansfield was exchanging pictures of boys in various stages of undress.
Menino yesterday vowed that Mansfield will be fired after an administrative hearing. The mayor says it saddens him that anyone could endanger children, but to know the person who allegedly perpetrated these acts is truly devastating.
Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney’s office, says Mansfield will be arraigned tomorrow.
Vt. income tax lags, revenues up overall
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont’s largest source of tax revenue — the personal income tax — is coming into state coffers at slightly less than the expected pace.
But Administration Secretary Jeb Spaulding says he’s not worried, because it appears to be less a function of the underlying economy than the timing of collections.
He says he’s encouraged that sales and use and rooms and meals tax receipts ran 5 to 6 percent ahead of expectations for September.
Overall tax collections for September were about $121 million — just a hair ahead of what was expected for the month.
Pawtucket to save $25K a year in electric costs
PAWTUCKET, R.I. — The city of Pawtucket is hoping to save $25,000 a year by installing more energy-efficient lighting and other equipment at municipal buildings.
Mayor Donald Grebien says the project involves the installation of new lighting, timers, motion sensors and other components in place of old ones at the City Hall complex, the Department of Public Works and the animal shelter at Slater Park.
His office says National Grid utility estimates the project will yield savings of just over $25,000 annually in electricity costs. The utility is subsidizing 70 percent of the $146,000 installation cost, and the city is eligible for a 10 percent rebate from the subcontractor doing the installation.
Grebien calls it a “win-win” for the environment and taxpayers.
Installation work will begin in two to three weeks.
Maritime Academy gets federal funding
BOURNE — The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is among six state maritime academies that will share an additional $2.3 million from a federal government program that recycles obsolete vessels.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay will get nearly $393,000.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the majority of goods involved in global trade moved over water. He says the latest funds will help those attending maritime academies get the training they need to keep the economy moving forward.
Funding is being made available from the sale of obsolete vessels from the federal Maritime Administration’s National Defense Reserve Fleet. Some money comes from budget savings generated by the agency.
Other beneficiaries include the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. And SUNY Maritime College in Fort Schuyler, N.Y.
