More jobs, but slightly higher unemployment in Massachusetts

BOSTON — The state's unemployment rate rose slightly in October, even though the economy added 7,900 jobs, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ preliminary October 2012 estimates.

The total unemployment rate inched up from 6.5 percent in September to 6.6 percent in October. The unemployment rate is down 0.5 of a percentage point from the October 2011 rate of 7.1 percent.

Over the year, October 2011 to October 2012, jobs are up 43,000. Private sector jobs are up 44,500, for a growth rate of 1.6 percent with gains in 7 of the 10 sectors.

Job gainers

Construction added 2,400 jobs over the month, but over the year, construction jobs are down 2,300, or about 2.1 percent.

Professional, scientific, and business services gained 2,400 jobs over the month.

Financial activities added 1,700 jobs.

Education and health services gained 1,300 jobs.

Manufacturing added 400 jobs over the month.

Information gained 200 jobs over the month. Year to date, this sector has added 3,100 jobs.

Job losers

Trade, transportation, and utilities shed 700 jobs.

Leisure and hospitality lost 200 jobs over the month.

Government added 400 jobs over the month, with federal government posting a 500-jobs gain while state government added 200. Local Government lost 300 jobs.
