HAVERHILL - Yesterday's water main break on Winter Street remains a nightmare for city workers trying to repair it.
It seems the 12-inch water main that burst runs underneath Little River. The city has dug a 15-foot hole to try and find it, but every time workers dig, the trench refills with water.
Bob Ward, deputy director of the city Department of Public Works in charge of water and wastewater, said an outside contractor had to be brought in with a bigger backhoe. The city's backhoe cannot reach deep enough to get to the main.
All but three businesses have had their water restored, as the city was able to reroute water through other mains. Ward said if the city cannot find another way to divert water to the three businesses on Stevens Street, workers may have to run temporary above-ground water mains to the buildings.
Traffic is allowed on the west bound side of Winter Street, leaving the city. However, cars coming from Lafayette Square toward City Hall are being detoured. Ward said this repair and road shutdown could remain in effect until tomorrow.
