A 22-year-old Lawrence man was fatally injured early today when the car he was riding in hit the center median barrier, then rolled over on Interstate 93 North at the Route 125 exit in Wilmington near the Andover line, state police said.
Two others were injured, and the driver faces criminal charges.
The man who was fatally injured, Hansel Paulino, was a passenger in a 2003 Acura TL driven by Dennes Almonte, 23, of Lawrence, who suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Another passenger, Jonathan Cruz, 24, of Lawrence, suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries when he was ejected from the car.
The accident happened about 5 a.m.
Troopers from the Andover Barracks arrived at the crash scene to find the Acura on its roof in the third travel lane. The car's engine was found 100 feet away in the first travel lane.
Paulino was unconscious and unresponsive after being thrown from the car by the impact of the crash. He was transported to Lahey Clinic in Wilmington, where he was pronounced dead of his crash injuries.
Cruz, the second passenger, was found 20 feet from the car. He was taken to Lahey.
Police said Almonte, the driver, walked away from the scene on foot and was later located on Ballardvale Street (Route 125) in Wilmington after he pulled a fire call box.
A state police dog was already tracking him from the crash scene to Ballardvale Street. Almonte was also taken to Lahey Clinic.
Police said Almonte faces charges of serious bodily injury by motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and speeding.
Almonte is held on $250,000 bail for arraignment in Woburn District Court.
