Two dead in New Year's Day crash after fleeing police

19-year-old victims from Lawrence, Lowell

ANDOVER — Two 19-year-old men — one from Lawrence and the other from Lowell — were killed early New Year's Day following a disastrous crash in Andover while attempting to flee from police down Route 28 in Lawrence, state police said.

Cesar Rodriguez of 135 Bowdoin St., Lawrence, and Quadeer Dicks of 25 South Walker St., Lowell, were both thrown from the 2007 Acura they were driving in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, according to a spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police

Spokesman David Procopio said the crash, which occurred over the line in Andover, marked the end of a high-speed chase called off by Lawrence police.

The department tried pulling the vehicle over for speeding and it took off at a high rate of speed, Procopio said.

Procopio said that after Lawrence police broke off the chase, they continued following the suspects on Route 28 into Andover, where they eventually discovered the crash at around 2:45 a.m.

Both suspects were found ejected from the vehicle, with the car resting in a snow-covered grass area by one of the on-ramps to Interstate 495, he said.

Both teens were transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where Dicks was declared dead, Procopio said. Rodriguez was flown by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where he later died, he said.

State Police are still looking into several details surrounding the crash, including who was driving and where the victims were coming from, Procopio said.

"It was early New Year's morning, so we are investigating where they may have been coming from if they were out celebrating the new year," he said.

The Acura they were driving was registered to an Amesbury woman, though it wasn't reported stolen at the time of the crash, according to Procopio.
