Teen seriously hurt in early-morning crash

SALEM — A Salem teen received serious injuries early this morning when his car slammed into a tree just before 12:30 near 137 Millville St.

Zachary Hicks, 19, was alone in the car. Salem fire personnel extricated Hicks, who was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

Police described his injuries as life threatening.

The road was closed for several hours and the accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate.

The investigation is ongoing, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said this morning, but police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
