---- — AURORA, Colo. (AP) — Police said early Friday that up to 14 people were killed in a shooting at a movie theater near Denver.

Aurora, Colo., police said up to 50 people were injured in the shooting. Police were checking the area for explosives.

Police dispatchers said calls about the shooting started coming in about 1:30 a.m. CDT Friday from a mall theater that was showing the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Police said one person had been arrested. Police were searching the man’s apartment at a complex in north Aurora.

Police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said “the scene is still very active and we have little information for release at this time.”

A police official said “witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire.”

Swedish Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Williams said at least two of the injured arrived at her hospital in critical condition, and the hospital was told there could be several more.

Witness Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he was inside Theater 16 and heard several shots.

“Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station.
