Robbery suspect blames drugs for behavior

By John Toole

---- — DERRY — A Derry woman appearing in court today on robbery related charges blamed her trouble on drug addiction.

"Please lower my bail," Rochelle Richards, 23, pleaded with Judge John Coughlin. "I have a drug problem."

Coughlin approved the $50,000 cash bail requested by the prosecution.

Richards is charged with robbery for a holdup Sunday at the East Derry General Store and attempted robbery at the Subway in Londonderry on Tuesday.

Police said she also is under investigation by Manchester police, although no charges have been filed yet there.

Coughlin scheduled a probable cause hearing for April 17 and agreed to appoint an attorney to represent Richards at her request.

Her parents, Michael and Nina, were in the courtroom.

Richards repeatedly sobbed during the video arraignment in 10th Circuit Court in Derry this morning. She is being held in the county jail.

"I just want to get out, please," Richards begged the judge.

"What my daughter said is true," Michael Richards told Coughlin. "She has a drug addiction problem."

Coughlin, in reviewing the charges against her, said Richards had told a clerk in East Derry that she would shoot her "or worse" if she attempted to follow.
