BOSTON — Did Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester have an illegal substance in his glove during last night's opener of the World Series at Fenway Park?
That's the controversy brewing as the teams head into Game 2 tonight at 8.
It started after Game 1 when a St. Louis Cardinals farmhand, Tyler Melling, tweeted this: "Jon Lester using a little Vaseline inside the glove tonight?" He later deleted the Tweet.
A video was also posted that showed Lester touching a discolored area on the thumb on the inside of his black glove.
Major League Baseball issued a statement today about the matter: "We cannot draw any conclusions from this video. There were no complaints."
But Eagle-Tribune photographer Paul Bilodeau captured an image during Game 1 that clearly shows some greenish substance, possibly pine tar, on the thumb of the glove.
Pitchers have been known to use pine tar to improve their grip in cold weather. It is illegal to so, however.
