All safe at Rollins School after lockdown; suspect in custody

LAWRENCE — A city school was placed on lockdown this morning after a report of an armed man nearby.

Rollins School at 451 Howard St. was briefly placed on lockdown, but all students and staff were reported safe, said Police Chief James Fitzpatrick.

Police said a suspect was taken into custody about noon.

The incident began when a school employee saw a man on a ladder trying to break into a nearby home. The employee called police, who entered the home, where they were attacked by a dog. Police shot and killed the dog.

The lockdown was triggered when someone involved in the incident approached the school. Police surrounded the school before the scene was cleared shortly after noon.
