Third case of EEE found in Newton

NEWTON — Only days before the state health department stops testing mosquitoes, a third case of Eastern equine encephalitis has been found in mosquitoes on North Main Street.

A Dragon Mosquito Control crew is spraying this afternoon near a large swamp on North Main Street to "try to kill all the adult mosquitoes that are left," owner Sarah MacGregor said.

The same late-season tests that identified a positive case in Newton also found a new case in Newfields. The two towns have each had residents fighting the virus since 2005.

In Newton, 20-year-old Kelly Labell died seven years ago after contracting EEE. Two years later, another Newton man got EEE but later recovered. That same year, a Newfields teenager was diagnosed with the virus and is still recovering.
