Congress: Tsongas declares victory over Golnik

U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas has declared victory in her re-election bid against Republican Jon Golnik.

Tsongas, D-Lowell, beat Golnik in Methuen (13,274 to 7,486) and Andover (8,247 to 5,637). The Eagle-Tribune is still awaiting results in Haverhill and Lawrence.

Tsongas will represent the newly-formed 3rd Congressional District after representing the Merrimack Valley in the 5th District since 2007.

The race was a rematch of 2010, when Tsongas beat Golnik by a margin of 55 to 42 percent. Golnik, of Carlisle, earned 94,646 votes to Tsongas’ 122,858 that year in what was the best showing in the Valley from a Republican congressional hopeful since 1992.
