O'Connor Ives wins state Senate seat

Newburyport Democrat Kathleen O’Connor Ives has won the 1st Essex state Senate race.

Republican Shaun Toohey of Haverhill is expected to finish second in the four-candidate race ahead of independents Paul Magliocchetti of Haverhill and James Kelcourse of Amesbury.

Poll results showed O’Connor Ives with commanding wins in Methuen, Newburyport, North Andover, and Haverhill.

This is the first open race for the seat in a decade. Former senator Steve Baddour, D-Methuen, resigned earlier this year to take a job with a private law firm.

The district includes Newburyport, Amesbury, Salisbury, Merrimac, Haverhill, Methuen, and about half of North Andover.
