Derry man killed in snowmobile crash

SAINT-JOSEPH-de-MADAWASKA, New Brunswick — A Derry resident was killed Saturday afternoon in a snowmobile accident, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The RCMP did not identify the victim by name, only reported he was a 72-year-old Derry resident.

The man was operating a snowmobile alone just before 2 p.m. Saturday when he missed a turn and struck a tree.

The crash occurred near Saint-Joseph-de-Madawaska, on a trail about 40 kilometers northwest of the Moose Valley Lodge.

A man died at the scene, according to District 10 RCMP Cpl. Pierre Ayotte.

Police are still investigating exactly what happened, according to Ayotte, but speed is believed to have been a primary factor in the collision.
