WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon yesterday confirmed that a soldier from Lawrence is among is among seven soldiers who are either missing or confirmed dead after a weekend ambush south of Baghdad.
Spc. Alex R. Jimenez, 25, and the other soldiers are members of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
Confirmed dead are: Sgt. 1st Class James D. Connell Jr., 40, of Lake City, Tenn.; Pfc. Daniel W. Courneya, 19, of Nashville, Mich.; and Pfc. Christopher E. Murphy, 21, of Lynchburg, Va.
The four other soldiers, including Jimenez, are : Sgt. Anthony J. Schober, 23, of Reno, Nev.; Pfc. Joseph J. Anzack Jr., 20, of Torrance, Calif.; and Pvt. Byron W. Fouty, 19, of Waterford, Mich. The Pentagon said one of those four was among the dead, but it could not confirm which one.
A massive search involving about 4,000 troops was launched, and yesterday the U.S. military was dropping leaflets seeking information about the three soldiers feared captured. An Al-Qaida group has warned that the hunt will endanger the captives' lives.

It appeared no one was hurt in accident at 988 Amesbury Road, about a quarter-mile from the Merrimac line. The house is next to Joe's Quick Stop convenience store. An initial report on the Fire Department scanner said the SUV crashed into the store. -
