SALEM, N.H. — Kmart at 161 S. Broadway is closed while police investigate a bomb threat called in at about 2:30 this afternoon.
The store and all other businesses — including Market Basket, Walgreens, Staples, Lenscrafters, 99 Restaurant — have been evacuated and the plaza closed, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said.
A man called the store and threatened to detonate three bombs he claimed were inside the store, Patten said.
Police responded quickly and a store employee was still on the phone with the suspect when they arrived, he said.
The caller said he was going to detonate the devices and told the employee to "enjoy the ride," Patten said.
Police and fire personnel are on the scene and have closed the plaza to all traffic.
Two N.H. State Police bomb-sniffing K-9s are en route, he said.
He asked motorists to avoid that stretch of busy Route 28 if at all possible.
"We anticipate the plaza will be closed for a while, maybe several hours," Patten said. "We have to wait for the store to be cleared of any potential devices."
