Water main break snarls traffic on Route 28

SALEM, N.H. - Another major water main break is making a mess of the morning commute on Route 28.

Police said a main broke at about 2:30 this morning on Route 28 near the lights at Marshall's and Home Depot. The break caused the road to buckle, police said.

This is the third major water main break in about as many weeks. The last two were in Salem Depot.

As of 6 a.m., the southbound lanes of Route 28 have been opened to allow travel in both directions, with police and traffic cones in place to direct motorists.

The Department of Public Works estimates the break could take hours to repair.
