Reams agrees to resign immediately

BRENTWOOD — Longtime Rockingham County Attorney James Reams has agreed to resign, county commissioners announced this afternoon.

Reams' resignation is effective today and he will be paid about $42,000 to leave — the remainder of his $85,000-a-year salary, Commissioner Kevin Coyle said.

Commissioners voted, 2-1, to accept the settlement agreement, with Chairwoman Katharin Pratt in opposition.

Coyle said the commission accepted Reams' offer to resign because he had become too much of a distraction since returning to office earlier this spring following a sixth-month paid suspension.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has asked a Superior Court judge to remove Reams from office following allegations he mismanaged county money and sexually harassed female employees.
