Chism indicted in assault on DYS worker

Philip Chism, the teen charged with murdering his high school math teacher last fall, was indicted Wednesday by a Suffolk County grand jury on charges stemming from a June 2 attack on a Department of Youth Services worker in Boston.

Chism, 15, will now face charges of attempted murder by strangulation, assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, all as a "youthful offender," in Suffolk County Juvenile Court, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley.

Prosecutors say Chism assaulted a 29-year-old female staff member at the Metro Youth Services facility in Dorchester while he was being held there awaiting trial in the murder case.

Chism is charged with last October's murder, rape and robbery of Colleen Ritzer, 24, of Andover.

In the incident at the DYS facility last month, he allegedly followed the woman into a bathroom and attacked her, holding a pencil.

Chism was hospitalized at Worcester State Hospital, where he underwent a mental health evaluation, which has been completed, according to court records.

He was sent there after exhibiting "psychotic" symptoms, including foaming at the mouth, following the assault.

The youthful offender indictment opens the case to the public. An arraignment date has not been set.
