Short of ballots, Salem keeps polls open until 8 p.m.

SALEM — Polling hours were extended an extra hour tonight after the town ran out of ballots.

Salem's six polling locations are being kept open until 8 p.m., town moderator Chris Goodnow said.

The town had 6,500 ballots printed, but fell about 500 short nearly an hour before the polls closed, Goodnow said.

The polls opened at 7 a.m. and were to close at 7 p.m. Election officials had to make photocopies of the ballot and will count them by hand, Goodnow said.

Polling locations saw a steady stream of voters all day, election officials said. The line at Town Hall stretched out into the parking lot yesterday afternoon as people came to vote on issues that included a controversial curbside trash pickup proposal and a $21 million school renovation bond.
