UPDATED: Romero retiring, Lantigua to announce plans to replace police chief in coming days

LAWRENCE — Police Chief John Romero today announced he will retire Sept. 3.

Romero, 63, said "this was a tough decision, but after 15 years here I felt it was time for me to go."

"The department is going in the right direction. When I first came here I never expected I would be here for 15 years. I have made this my home and I will always consider it a home," Romero said.

He said told Mayor William Lantigua about his decision this morning.

Lantigua issued a statement. The statement says Lantigua will announce a succession plan to fill the chief's position in coming days.

"It is with heavy heart that I accept this announcement today by Chief Romero, a man who has dedicated his whole life to law enforcement. A press release, a sound bite or even a press conference will not do justice in highlighting his accomplishments, his professionalism and his leadership over the years," Lantigua's statement reads. "John will truly be missed, our department will have an immediate void going forward, but I know his work ethic and leadership style will live on at 90 Lowell Street."

Romero said he expects he will be moving to California where his two daughters live.
