---- — NEWTON — Mosquitoes have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis on North Main Street, triggering a fast response from the town.

A townwide spraying of mosquitoes will be conducted Tuesday and next Wednesday at dusk, weather permitting, according to health officer Robert Leverone.

The town, which notified residents this afternoon, was contacted by the state Department of Health and Human Services.

Residents are encouraged to minimize contact with mosquitoes by using an effective insect repellent containing DEET when going outside at dusk or night. Residents should also wear protective clothing such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts and socks when outside and keep mosquitoes from entering their home.

The town sprayed high-risk areas in recent weeks as mosquitoes in other communities tested positive for the disease. Newton resident Kelly Labell, 20, contracted the virus in 2005 and died.
