Haverhill, Lawrence police arrest man in connection with Monday shooting on Dorchester Street

HAVERHILL — An Auburn Street man was arrested this morning and charged with shooting a man in Lawrence on Monday, police said.

Jose Reyes, 21, of 75 Auburn St., was wanted on a warrant out of Lawrence charging him with armed assault with intent to murder, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

He had also been wanted by Haverhill police on a separate charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was booked at the Haverhill station at 4:04 a.m. today.

He will be arraigned in Haverhill District Court first and then transferred to Lawrence District Court for arraignment on the Lawrence charges.

He was arrested in his home around 3 a.m. today by a SWAT team made up of Haverhill and Lawrence police officers. Lawrence Police Chief John Romero said Reyes attempted to flee.

"They grabbed him as he was trying to escape out the back door," Romero said.

According to police, at around 3:45 p.m. Monday Reyes shot a man at the corner of South Union and Dorchester streets in Lawrence.

The victim, Pedro Valentin, 49, of Lawrence, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital and later flown to a Boston hospital by medical helicopter in serious condition, Romero said.
