Water main break causes major traffic mess

SALEM, N.H. — A major water main break has stalled and snarled traffic at one of the busiest intersections in town at the start of a holiday weekend.

The break, reported at 7 a.m., is at the intersection of Routes 28 and 97 in the Depot.

Traffic has been detoured around the area and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Repairs are expected to take hours, well into the evening, possibly longer.

Traffic heading west on Route 97 (Main Street) is being detoured to Granite Avenue. Eastbound traffic stops at Pleasant Street. Cars can travel on Pleasant Street or the road behind Tuscan Market, which connects to Willow Street.

Route 28 is down to one travel lane in both directions. Vehicles are not being allowed to turn left onto Main Street from either direction.

The Department of Public Works is on the scene, but repairs are significant and will be time consuming.
