---- — PELHAM — Selectmen last night unanimously upheld the recommendation of police Chief Joseph Roark to fire Officer Eugene Stahl.
The dismissal took effect yesterday, when the board convened to make its decision, Selectmen's Chairman William McDevitt said.
Selectmen are making a formal announcement today, but, on the advice of their attorney, not commenting further.
David Slawsky, an attorney who represented Stahl in the disciplinary proceeding, said this morning the police union will appeal the decision through the labor grievance process.
At a hearing last month, an attorney representing the police administration said Stahl had been repeatedly suspended for disregarding department policies, had spoken in anger to citizens and needlessly waved his gun near a school bus.
Slawsky had defended Stahl, saying he was an award-winning officer, praised at times in job reviews by his chief and respected by his peers.
