---- — HAVERHILL — Merrimack Street was reopened to traffic shortly before 1 p.m., after the main downtown street was closed for nearly two hours due to an underground electrical fire.
As the street was reopened, National Grid workers were on the sidewalk in front of the Merrimack Street parking deck and appeared ready to dig with an excavator.
The road was shut down late this morning between How Street and Main Street, said police Lt. Robert Pistone.
Pistone said that it was too early to determine a cause of the fire, which occurred just after 11 a.m. National Grid is reporting 60 customers are affected. They include several downtown businesses.
