Haverhill man ID'd as driver in Gloucester fatality

GLOUCESTER — A Haverhill man has been identified as the driver under investigation in the death of a Salem, Mass., man who was reportedly struck or run over by a car in the Pond View Village housing complex early Saturday.

James Hayes, 43, of 125 Ferry St., in Haverhill, has not been taken into custody and is still “cooperating" with investigators, said Carrie Kimball Monahan, speaking on behalf of the office of Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Monahan said that Hayes was questioned at the scene. He was also interviewed at the Gloucester police station in the hours after the incident. But no charges have been filed, Monahan said this morning, and the incident remains under investigation.

The victim was identified as Michael J. Linscott, a 29-year-old Salem man, who was fatally injured on LePage Lane in West Gloucester’s Pond View Village housing complex.

Gloucester Police Chief Leonard Campanello referred all calls regarding the incident to the DA’s office.

Monahan said a 911 call came at 1:41 a.m. Saturday indicating that “a man had been struck by a car at 39 LePage Lane.” The victim was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Monahan said. Linscott was initially listed by police and the DA’s office as being from Danvers, but his mother said Sunday that he had lived with her in Salem.
