Cop shoots man outside Lawrence club to stop beating

A Lawrence police officer shot and wounded a man who was beating another man with a baseball bat outside a city nightclub early today, the office of District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett reported.

The man who was shot was hospitalized at Lawrence General Hospital, while the victim of the beating was at a Boston Hospital. The police office was placed on paid leave, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.

Here is Blodgett's release on the incident:

A Lawrence Police Officer shot a man in the chest while attempting to stop him from beating another man with a baseball bat outside of a night club early this morning.

At approximately 1:11 am, Officer William Green was working a paid detail (in uniform) at the “Club Copa” at 1 Mill Street in Lawrence. On or about closing time, Officer Green became aware of a disturbance in the alley adjacent to the north said of the building. According to Officer Green, he discovered an adult male beating another adult male with a baseball bat. The preliminary investigation indicates that Officer Green issued multiple verbal commands for the assailant to drop the bat. After the assailant did not respond to those commands and continued to strike the downed man with the bat, Officer Green fired two (2) rounds from his department issued firearm which struck the assailant in the chest and ended the attack.

The assailant, who has been placed under arrest, is Jose Concepcion (DOB 10/9/1986) of 187 Chestnut Street, Lawrence, MA. At the time of this release, Concepcion was reported to be in stable condition at Lawrence General Hospital.

The 27 year-old victim of the assault was initially treated at Lawrence General Hospital and was later transferred to Beth Israel Hospital where he is being treated for blunt force trauma to his head and multiple stab wounds to his torso.

Officer Green, a seven-year veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave per protocol. The incident is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s Office and the Lawrence Police Department.
