Boy stricken at playground hit his head, children say, but seizure may have been problem, according to police

HAVERHILL — A teenage boy was rushed to the hospital after being unresponsive at the Portland Street playground this afternoon, police said.

Police and children at the playground are giving different stories about what happened. Children told an Eagle-Tribune reporter that the boy was doing tricks on his bicycle and fell, hitting his head. He was not wearing a helmet, they said. But police said the boy was sitting on a curb near the playground and was not feeling well. He possibly suffered a seizure, police said.

Rescue workers took the boy by ambulance to Merrimack Valley Hospital. Medflight was being called to Haverhill and was scheduled to land at the hospital.

The helicopter was expected to take the boy to a Boston hospital for treatment. The incident happened about 3 p.m.

The boy's name was not available from police, but police said he is 14 years old. Children at the playground said he is about to enter the seventh grade at Nettle School.

The playground is on the stretch of Portland Street that is between 4th and 5th avenues.

A complete report will appear in tomorrow's Eagle-Tribune.
