Police hunt for man who tried to break into home

GROVELAND — State police and several local departments are hunting for a man who tried to break into a home, but fled when the homeowner noticed him.

Officers are combing woods and yards in the Baldwin Terrace area after a man dressed in a black hoodie tried to get into the home through a bulkhead. Police said the man was scared off by a woman who heard him trying to break in.

The intruder was described as wearing the hoodie and bluejeans and having black hair.

Police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Gillen said officers from Groveland, Boxford and Georgetown, as well as two state police K-9 units, are searching the area between Baldwin Terrace, a small cul-de-sac off Route 97, and Gardner Street. He said officers found footprints in the snow leading from the home to the woods they are searching. The woman called police at about 2:30 p.m. to report the man.

Police asked residents to be on the lookout for any strangers, to report any suspicious activity to police immediately, and to lock their doors.
