ANDOVER — An employee of a subcontractor working on a bridge project for the MBTA sustained life-threatening injuries when a tractor-trailer rolled backwards, pinning him between two of the rear tires at a work site off Lupine Road
The worker, whose name and age were unavailable, was flown to Beth Israel Hospital with severe, lower-extremity injuries, according to Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield and Police Lt. James Hashem.
At around 11:40 a.m., the driver of the truck was attaching a trailer to the back of his cab when the vehicle shifted backwards, pinning the man underneath and between the two rear, left tires of the truck.
Firefighters used pneumatic, inflatable bags to lift the tires off the man, who was conscious and alert when he was taken from the scene by the Andover Rescue Squad, Mansfield said. The man did sustain "life-threatening injuries," Mansfield said.
He was flown to Boston from the parking lot of Hewlett-Packard off Dascomb Road.
Lupine Road was shut from the Andover Federal Credit Union on Lupine Road to Central Street.
The accident is being investigated by Mass. State Police, OSHA and Andover police and fire.
The man worked for J.F. White, a contracting company based in Stoughton, Mansfield said. They were working on the railroad bridge that crosses over the Shawsheen River just before it crosses over Central Street.
