Hit-run driver injures Haverhill school girl

HAVERHILL — A 13-year Nettle Middle School girl was injured this morning by a hit-and-run driver on Summer Street at the intersection of Stage Street, near City Hall and the library.

Police said she walking to school and was in the roadway when hit by the vehicle.

She was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital to be evaluated, according to school officials. Her name and condition were not immediately available.

The girl lives near the scene of the accident, and her mother was with her when the ambulance arrived and went with her to the hospital. It is not clear whether the mother saw the accident or if other students were with the girl who was hit.

The accident happened shortly after 8 a.m.

Police said they were given information about the vehicle and are investigating.

The intersection where the accident happened is a little more than half a mile from the school.
