Police: Driver speeding, weaving before fatal crash

SALEM, N.H. — There were two vehicles involved in a crash on Interstate 93 south yesterday evening that killed one driver.

Witnesses said a 2002 white Ford F-150 was speeding and changing lanes at about 7:20 p.m. Near mile marker 0.4, the truck hit a 2009 Infinity, causing the driver of that car to lose control, according to New Hampshire State Police.

The pickup truck then struck the guardrail in the median and rolled over several times. The driver was ejected and suffered fatal injuries, police said. The man, whose name police have not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Infinity received only minor damage, its driver and passenger were not injured, police said.

The left two travel lanes were closed for several hours and southbound traffic backed up for miles. Drivers converged in the far right travel lane and the breakdown lane, many apparently not heeding several electronic signs north of the scene, urging caution and directing them to stay right. The result was a traffic snarl that left many sitting for up to an hour.

Troopers from Troop B were assisted by members of the Salem Police and Fire Departments, the Massachusetts State Police, the Department of Transportation and the N.H. State Police Technical Accident Reconstruction Unit.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Trooper S. Harrington at (603) 666-3333.
