Windham man sentenced to 10-20 years for fatal crash

DOVER — A Windham man will serve 10 to 20 to years in prison for causing an accident two years ago that killed a Salem woman and injured two other people.

Randall Stewart, 48, was sentenced today in Strafford Superior Court in Dover. He pleaded guilty in September to negligent homicide and other charges in the June 2010 death of Marceline Weaver, 49.

Stewart's sport utility vehicle plowed into a group of motorcyclists participating in a charity ride on Route 111 in Hampstead.

Weaver, riding on a motorcycle driven by her husband, William Weaver, died after being thrown from the bike. William Weaver was injured along with James Sousa of Salem, who broke multiple ribs and lost his lower left leg.

Minutes before the crash, police received reports from motorists of an erratic driver. The accident occurred just 12 hours after Stewart was released on a summons for driving while intoxicated following an incident in Pelham.

Stewart pleaded guilty to aggravated DWI, reckless conduct and second-degree assault in addition to negligent homicide.

He tried to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming his public defenders coerced him, but Judge John Lewis rejected his request.

Lewis had some words for Stewart today during his sentencing hearing.

"I'm sure you've done good things in your life, but not here," lewis told Stewarft. "This is a complete disaster."

Deputy County Attorney Tom Reid sought the 10- to 20-year sentence for Stewart.
