The North of Boston Media Group, which includes The Eagle-Tribune, announced the elimination of 21 full-time and part-time positions this week.
The Eagle-Tribune cut 12 positions, including eight newsroom jobs. Employees affected were notified Wednesday.
Al Getler, publisher of the newspaper and its affiliated weekly and periodical publications, cited the sluggish economy as the principal reason for the layoffs.
The rest of the cuts were spread among The Daily News of Newburyport, The Gloucester Daily Times, The Andover Townsman, The Derry News, and the shared services departments that serve all of the publications in the North of Boston Media Group.
The Salem News, which is also part of the group, was not affected by the layoffs.
The group now has a total of 380 employees.
The newspapers are owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc., of Montgomery, Ala., which publishes more than 100 daily and non-daily newspapers in 23 states.
