LAWRENCE — Sharon Birchall has been appointed as business development officer at the Metro Credit Union in the Merrimack Valley area. She joins Metro with more than 30 years of banking experience in the commercial lending department and in the area of business development. Prior to joining Metro, she worked at the Lawrence Firefighters Federal Credit Union. In her new role, she will be responsible for business development in the Lawrence branch area.

MANCHESTER — Forbes Magazine recently published its top 10 lists for airports that use Twitter. Airports are listed by category and ranked in accordance with their ratio of Twitter followers to total passengers. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport was listed ninth in the one to five million passenger category. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has an active following on both Twitter and Facebook. ATKINSON — Buzz Durkin was recently inducted into the World Martial Arts Federation Hall of Fame (WMAF), an organization of professional martial artists. Durkin received the Golden Lifetime Achievement Award for his more than 45-year involvement in the martial arts. For more than 36 of those years, he has been the headmaster of Buzz Durkin's Karate School in Atkinson. He is a past inductee in the United States Martial Arts Association Hall of Fame and a charter inductee of the Uechi-ryu Karate-do Hall of Fame.

LAWRENCE — After almost two years in pre-construction, Eckman Construction of Bedford is beginning work on the former Southwick Mill, in building No. 9 at 50 Island St., Lawrence. This will be the first phase of a mixed use development, known as Union Crossing, by Lawrence Community Works. When complete, the building will contain 60 apartments, a day care, commercial space, and several community spaces. The project owner is East Island Rentals, LLC, an affiliate of the nonprofit Lawrence Community Works. It was designed by Coldham and Hartman Architects, LLC of Amherst.

WOBURN — Hair Club employee Nikki Bonin of Derry celebrates Hair Club of New England's 30th anniversary at the company's franchise location on Lexington Street in Woburn. To share their anniversary celebration with the people of New England, New Englanders are invited to send in a 500-word essay about how hair loss has impacted their life for the chance to win a complimentary hair restoration treatment. Two winners (one man and one woman) will be chosen at the end of September, based on their stage of hair loss, appropriateness of the solution and personal preferences. LAWRENCE — Customers who make donations at seven Boston area Whole Foods Market stores can help feed children who rely on The Greater Boston Food Bank for weekend, holiday, and school vacation meals. Customers at participating Whole Foods Market stores are able to purchase bags of nutritious, kid-friendly foods for $9.99 per bag, to support The Food Bank's BackPack Program, which supplies food to children during periods when they do not have access to free or reduced-price school meals. The BackPack program currently serves children in the Lawrence and Lynn Public School systems, and starting in October will serve children in the Boston Public School system. PELHAM — Recently, Chunky's Cinema Pub was able to help combat the fight against hunger with a donation of over 1,200 pounds of food to the New Hampshire Food Bank with the help of its customers. Every Thursday night, Chunky's gives moviegoers the chance to redeem a canned good or nonperishable food item for $2 off the price of an evening ticket. Chunky's is able to make this donation about five times a year, totaling in over three tons of food donated per year. Chunky's Cinema Pub has three locations in Nashua and Pelham and Haverhill.
