Pump prices continue to climb

Small increases left regional and national gasoline prices higher again last week. It was the third consecutive week in which the average price of motor fuel moved higher.

Pump-price tracking by the auto club AAA put the Massachusetts state-wide average for self-service regular gas at $3.559 on Wednesday. That was 1.5 cents higher than the prior Wednesday’s figure of $3.544. But Wednesday’s Bay State average remained 16.4 cents lower than the $3.723 reported on the same day last year.

New Hampshire saw a similar increase, with the AAA average for self-service regular rising 1.3 cents over seven days, to $3.504 on Wednesday from $3.491 a week earlier. On the same day of 2013, the Granite State average of $3.681 was 17.7 cents higher than Wednesday’s level.

The U.S. national average stepped up to $3.490 on Wednesday, an increase of 2.6 cents from the $3.464 recorded by the auto club seven days earlier. Wednesday’s figure was 21.3 cents lower than the coast-to-coast average of $3.703 compiled on the same day last year.
